The small town is situated on the edge of Lake Te Anau which is the largest lake in the South Island and largest in New Zealand by water volume and sprawls at the feet of high rugged mountains awaiting for a variety of water activities. Te Anu is the town that connects Queenstown to Milford Sound by road and 2 hours drive from Queenstown. The famously scenic Milford Road begins in the centre of Te Anau.
There are many selections of day tours and leisure activities operators as well as café’s, restaurants and places to stay.
TIP: Stay here overnight if you plan to do a Milford Sound guided tour given that it’s closer as opposed to coming from Queenstown which can be a bit time-consuming.
